Account opening minimum
To open an online trading account, we require a minimum account opening balance of R100,000 in cash or scrip.

Can I have more than one trading account?
You can open multiple trading accounts and access all your accounts via a single log in. For example, you may want to have a discretionary and a non-discretionary account with Investec Wealth & Investment.

How do I open an online trading account?
You can contact Wealth & Investment Online on 0861 003 020 and chat to an administrator who will assist you with the account opening process. They will give you all the information required about our products, services, fees and help you complete the necessary documentation.

How long does it take to open an account?
An account will be opened within 24 hours of receipt of all signed documents, mandates, and all supporting documentation required.

How many times can I try to log on with the incorrect password before I am locked out?
You can attempt to log on three times before the system locks you out. To reset your password or for assistance, please contact the Technical Call Centre on 0860 564 467 or email onlineservices@investec.co.za.

How secure is online trading?
The Investec Wealth & Investment Online website for share trading is secure. We use the latest software and all communication is encrypted. Only one person at any time can be logged onto your account and we trace and record the connection every time you log on.

How do I increase my screen resolution?
For Windows:
Right click on your desktop
Click “Properties”
Click “Setting”
Slide the resolutions setting to 1024 x 768 or higher
Click on “Apply”
Click on “OK” and your screen resolution will be set

Can I conduct bear or short sales?
This facility is not offered online at present. However, bear/short sales can be arranged via a Portfolio Manager. Please call 011 286 4500 for more information.

Can I place and edit orders via the phone?
Yes, you can place and edit orders via the phone. The telephone number is 0861 003 020.

Do I earn interest on cash balances in my trading account?
Interest is earned on any cash in your trading account at JSE money market related rates.

Do I need cash in my account before I can purchase shares?
Yes, you will need to have sufficient cash in your account to cover the trade.
If you have signed a Carry Account Agreement then you do not need the full amount of cash in your account to cover the value of the trade.

Do we report on trades and interest earned to SARS?
We issue all clients will an IT3B form which details the interest earned for the year on your Investec Wealth & Investment account. This should be included with your annual tax returns to the South African Revenue Services (SARS).

We can offer you a comprehensive Capital Gains Tax (CGT) report at the end of the financial year to help you to complete your tax return.

How are trades confirmed?
Trades are confirmed on the Investec Wealth & Investment website on ‘My Portfolio’ and on the ‘Order Status’ screen.

Trades can also be confirmed via email or SMS which is sent to you as soon as a trade is completed. This can be set up as an Alert though the website.

How do I amend an order?
On the ‘Order Status’ screen, you select the ‘Amend’ button and make the necessary changes.

How do I transfer my account from another stockbroker to Investec Wealth & Investment?
All you need do is send a letter to your existing stockbroker requesting them to transfer your shares to Investec Wealth & Investment – remember to quote your Investec account number in the letter. Your broker will complete a transfer schedule which needs to be authorised by the JSE settlements authority (for complete portfolio transfers) and sent to both brokers once approved.

How does online trading work?
Online trading allows you to manage your own portfolio. You are able to view your portfolio, track share performance, and place trades online. The costs for online trading are lower than traditional trading fees and this environment offers you many added benefits such as live pricing, research, charting, single stock futures on screen trading and the newly launched Exchange.

How much history is available on my online account?
Three months trading history is available online.

What are the JSE trustees?
In terms of JSE rules, stockbrokers are not permitted to hold the cash in clients’ accounts in their own stockbroking bank account. Instead, this cash is held in a bank account which is controlled by the JSE Ltd on behalf of the stockbrokers.

What is a Carry Account?
A Carry Account is an account held with Investec Wealth & Investment where a special credit facility has been granted to the client against a defined share portfolio held by the client. The client has to meet the required criteria to be granted a carry facility.

What is Strate?
The authorised Central Securities Depository (CSD) for the electronic settlement of financial instruments in South Africa.

What is the JSE Securities Exchange?
Formerly known as the JSE Securities Exchange the name was changed during the course of 2006 to the JSE Limited (“JSE”) when the JSE listed on its own exchange.

Where will my dividends be paid?
Your dividends are automatically paid directly into your Investec Wealth & Investment trading account by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

Who takes care of my corporate actions (e.g. dividends, share splits etc)?
Investec Wealth & Investment will take care of your corporate actions for you. You elect how Investec must deal with your corporate actions on a form specific to this instruction.

Why are my requests for funds not always granted on the same day?
If you have sufficient settled funds in your account, we endeavour to transfer your funds as requested within 24 hours. If you have unsettled funds, these will only be available for withdrawal 5 business days after the sale trade took place. If you are having problems withdrawing funds, please contact us on 0861 003 020 for online accounts or +27 11 286 4500 for other accounts.
